John Shippen (1879-1968) was the first-ever American-born Golf Professional and the first-ever Black Golf Professional. As a teenager, Shippen helped build the original ShinnecockHills golf course in Southampton, NY. Willie Dunn, the Scottish golf pro at Shinnecock Hills, taught some of the young workers how to caddie and play the game. Shippen had a natural talent for the game and became one of Dunn’s best students.
Shippen played in the second US Open, held at Shinnecock Hills in 1896, where he finished tied for 5th place for a prize of $10.00. He played in several US Opens, again finishing in 5th place in 1902.
No other Black golfer would play in the U.S. Open again until Ted Rhodes in 1948.
Shippen was bestowed PGA of America membership posthumously in 2009.
